February 26th, 1944: A. Phillip Randolph

On this day in 1944, the Michigan Chronicle reports that A. Phillip Randolph delivers fiery oratory at Second Baptist Church.

Randolph speaks on the subject: “The Negro in War and in Peace.”

The founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters union maintains that African-Americans should “stop crawling on their bellies and stand up on their feet and fight back for their rights and for their freedom.”
