#SmallBusinessSaturday: Detroit Institute of Bagels

Detroit Institute of Bagel Banner

Two brothers looking to quench the bagel desert of Detroit started the DIB from their Corktown flat in March of 2011. For the first few weeks, they sold their bagels as a fundraiser for the Downtown Synagogue.

“Detroit’s coming back,” Levin said at the opening of Detroit Institute of Bagels, in Corktown with some help from U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy. The bagel shop received a $50,000 mini-grant from the conservancy, which drew on a $3.8-million federal earmark obtained by Levin, D-Mich., for improvements in the city’s Corktown district.

Thom Linn, chairman of the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy, said the terms of the mini-grants require a business recipient to operate for at least five years.
